Kathleen Anne Behan
Ms. Behan is a skilled trial lawyer and corporate lawyer who provides advice to a range of individual and corporate clients. She has 20 years of experience practicing law, including as a partner with Arnold & Porter LLP, and as National Security Litigation Counsel to the American Civil Liberties Union. Her specialties include criminal and compliance law, health care law, employment litigation, and special matters. Among her professional distinctions, Ms. Behan has been named one of the nation’s top 50 women litigators by the National Law Journal; recognized as a top Criminal Defense trial lawyer in the District of Columbia: and cited as one of the “Top 40 under 40” Washington Lawyers, by Washingtonian Magazine.
Academic & Personal Background
Ms. Behan is a 1985 Magna cum laude graduate of Yale College, and she received her law degree from Columbia Law School in December, 1988. She is the recipient of prizes at both Yale and Columbia for her academic, social and human rights work. Ms. Behan also writes and teaches at law schools and conferences on the topics of capital punishment, health care, civil rights and liberties, and disability.
Ms. Behan also received training through the Institute for Comparative Political and Economic Systems at Georgetown, and has worked on legal matters for the State Department and other government agencies. She is a member of the Women’s Foreign Policy Group, National Association of Professional Women, and Litigation Counsel of America.
Ms. Behan serves on the Board of Directors of probono.net, the Advisory Board the Tahirih Justice Center, and the Legal Advisory Committees of the Epilepsy Foundation of America and the ACLU of Virginia.
Known by her friends and colleagues as Kitty, Ms. Behan currently resides in Alexandria, VA and Tilghman Island, MD with her cairn terrier, Sarah. She is an avid sailor, hiker, and occasional artist.
